I was recently asked a question that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. One of those questions that feels simple… but hits you right between the eyes.
“If you just had your best year ever… how would you know?”
I’ve talked many times about starting with the end in mind.
But this question?
This question brings the end to life.
It gives it colour, feeling, weight, context.
It turns a blurry goal into a vision you can actually see — and more importantly, something you can measure your life against.
And here’s the truth this question quietly reveals:
Most people’s “best year ever” is much simpler than they think.

We Think the Staircase Is Massive… But It’s Usually Not
People imagine that success — happiness, fulfilment, freedom — sits at the top of some gigantic staircase.
Something huge.
Intense.
Complicated.
Maybe even impossible.
But when you actually sit with the question —
“How would I know?” —
you often realise the staircase is far smaller than you’ve been telling yourself.
In fact, I honestly wonder whether some people make the staircase look bigger just so they don’t have to climb it.
Because if the dream seems too far away, you can stay where you are without feeling guilty about it.
But when you deliberately picture your “best year ever,” the story changes.
For most people, it’s not yachts, private jets, and 18-bedroom mansions.
It’s time.
It’s energy.
It’s connection.
It’s options.
It’s a life that feels like yours.
And that realisation is powerful.
Because it tells you your dream might not be as difficult, expensive, or far away as you once believed.
So… What Would It Look Like? And What Would It Feel Like?
When we set goals — money goals, property goals, business goals — we often forget to ask the real question:
What does that actually translate into?
Not the number.
Not the metric.
Not the KPI.
The life.
For me, I invested in property because it was a vehicle for freedom.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
I never cared about the number of properties.
I cared about the life those properties allowed me to build.
And that’s where this question becomes powerful:
If you just had your best year ever, what would it look like?
And what would it feel like?
Because feelings are data.
Lifestyle is data.
Your day-to-day experience is the biggest KPI of them all.
I once interviewed a big property investor — someone who was absolutely flying — and I asked him what a perfect day looked like for him.
His answer?
“Taking my kids to the park.”
Not Dubai.
Not a yacht.
Not anything flashy.
Just time.
Time to be a dad.
Time to be present.
He told me that his perfect day cost almost nothing — it was time he needed, not money.
That moment has stayed with me.
Because your perfect year is built from perfect days.
Your perfect days are built from the things that genuinely matter to you.
And those things are usually simple.

What I Learned Answering This Question Myself
When I asked myself the same question —
“How would I know if I’d just had my best year ever?” —
the answer came quickly.
For me, it has always been about time.
I am so grateful that I have the flexibility I have today. And I’m grateful that I get to share that with my husband.
Our lives have very few constraints — the biggest one is the kids’ school timetable.
That’s it.
And that’s enough.
That one constraint shapes the rhythm of our life more than money ever could.
So when I think about my best year ever, it isn’t about the size of a business.
Or the number of properties.
Or how many zeros are in the bank.
It’s about:
- having time for school runs
- having time for family adventures
- having time for the things that matter
- having time for myself
- having time to build, create and grow
- choosing how I spend my days instead of feeling forced or trapped by them
That’s my version of success.
Yours will be different — but I promise you this:
It will be simpler than you think.
And also closer than you think.

Reflect on the Last Year — Then Look Ahead
When you look back at your previous year, reflect with this question in mind:
“If it wasn’t my best year ever… what was missing?”
And then look ahead and ask:
“What am I actually aiming for? And how would I know when I’ve got it?”
You’d be amazed how many people chase goals without understanding:
- what it costs
- what it creates
- what it changes
- what it restricts
- and whether it actually leads to the life they want
Because goals without clarity can trap you just as easily as they can free you.
So get curious:
What does your best year ever cost?
(Spoiler: usually less than you think.)
What are the current constraints on your desired lifestyle?
(Is it money? Time? Energy? Confidence? Direction?)
And what would need to shift for you to experience the year you actually want?
This is where life becomes design, not default.
