Who’s in Your Corner? Why the People Around You Matter More Than You Think

I recently heard someone say, “Behind every unsuccessful man, there’s a strong woman.”

Now, like you, I’ve heard the opposite version many times — “Behind every successful man, there’s a strong woman.”
But I’d never heard it flipped like that before.

And it stopped me in my tracks.

Because whether you’re a man or a woman, that sentence carries a powerful truth: the people closest to you play a huge role in your success — or in your struggle.

The Obvious — That Isn’t Always Obvious

It might sound obvious, but in practice, it’s one of the most overlooked truths I see in property.

I meet so many people who are desperate to grow, to build a portfolio, to change their financial future… yet their partner isn’t involved.
Sometimes they’re uninterested.
Sometimes they’re sceptical.
Sometimes they just don’t understand what their other half is trying to do.

And that’s not just a relationship problem waiting to happen — it’s a property problem too.

When you’re not aligned with the person you share your life with, it shows up in your decisions, your stress levels, and your ability to take risks with confidence.

You might hold back on a deal because you know it’ll cause tension at home.
Or you might overcompensate and make rushed choices just to prove something.

Either way — it matters.

It’s Not Just About Your Partner

This idea doesn’t just apply to your significant other.

It applies to everyone in your circle — your business partners, mentors, contractors, consultants, even the people you spend time with socially.

Property isn’t a solo sport.
No matter how independent or experienced you are, you’ll always rely on other people.

The question is — who are those people?

Are they strong enough to challenge you?
Do they ask the hard questions when you’re getting carried away?
Do they help you stay grounded, strategic, and focused on the end goal?

Or are they “yes” people — the ones who tell you what you want to hear?
Worse still, are they the people who say “no” to everything, shutting down ideas before they’ve even been tested?

Either extreme can be dangerous.

The goal isn’t to surround yourself with people who agree with you — it’s to build a team who can challenge you constructively and help you see blind spots you didn’t even know were there.

The Audit That Changed Everything

I remember several years ago hearing a phrase that completely changed how I approached my relationships:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

It struck a nerve.

At the time, I was in a few friendships and business relationships that, if I’m honest, weren’t helping me grow.
There was always drama, negativity, or a lack of accountability.

After hearing that quote, I did something simple but powerful: I audited my circle.

I asked myself, “Who am I spending the most time with — and are they pushing me forward or holding me back?”

It wasn’t easy, but I made some tough decisions.
I stepped away from a few relationships that didn’t align with the person, or the portfolio, I wanted to build.

It wasn’t about arrogance or cutting people off — it was about being intentional.

Because if you want to build something extraordinary, you can’t keep surrounding yourself with ordinary thinking.

Your Circle Is Either Fuel or Friction

In property, your circle determines your momentum.

If you’re surrounded by people who challenge you in the right way, you make better decisions, faster.
If you’re surrounded by people who drain your energy or plant doubt in your mind, every move becomes harder than it needs to be.

I’ve seen it play out again and again.
One investor moves quickly, grows a strong portfolio, and stays balanced.
Another with the same potential gets stuck — second-guessing themselves, firefighting, or arguing with people who don’t share their vision.

The difference isn’t intelligence.
It’s environment.

As Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
And as I’ve seen first-hand, that applies to both your personal and professional life.

A Quick Test

Here’s a quick question to ask yourself:

When was the last time you checked who’s in your corner?

Not just out of loyalty or habit — but in terms of alignment, shared vision, and accountability.

Who around you:

  • Challenges your ideas with respect?
  • Encourages you when you doubt yourself?
  • Reminds you of your goals when things get tough?

And just as importantly — who drains your energy?
Who makes you question yourself for the wrong reasons?
Who do you walk away from feeling smaller, not stronger?

That one reflection can change everything.

Property Is About People

At its core, property is a people business.
Every deal, every negotiation, every project comes down to how well you can work with others.

But before you focus on the people you work with, focus on the people you work around.

Your relationships are either a springboard or a ceiling.

If you want to grow your portfolio, your mindset, and your peace of mind — take a look at who’s in your circle.

Because behind every successful investor, there’s a strong support network.
And behind every struggling one, there’s usually a lack of it.

Choose wisely.
